Speech Awareness Activity:
Background information:
Some people have trouble talking. It is hard to understand them.
Try this:
Put some marshmallows in your mouth and talk with a partner.
What you will need:
Marshmallows
Simple question cards (ex. What is your favorite movie and why is it your favorite? Where is your favorite place to travel and why? What will you do this weekend? etc.)
Directions:
- Partner One puts 2 or 3 marshmallows in their mouth.
- Partner One takes one Question Card. Do not show anyone the card.
- Partner One, with the marshmallows in your mouth, read the question to your partner .
- Your partner will listen and answer the question.
- If your partner does not understand you, Partner One, with the marshmallows still in your mouth, repeat the question.
Talk about it:
- If you were the person with marshmallows, how did you feel if your partner didn’t understand you?
- If you were the partner, how did if feel when you couldn’t understand your friend?
- Can someone with a Speech problem help it if it’s hard for them to say words clearly?
- What are some things you could do or say to help someone who has trouble speaking and being understood?
