Physical Abilities (legs) Awareness

Physical Ability Awareness Activity (legs):

Background information:

Some people who have Physical Disabilities can’t move their legs very well to walk or run, or maybe they can’t move their legs to walk at all.  Sometimes they have to use wheelchairs or crutches or braces on their legs to help them move around.

Try this:

Have a race using wheel chairs and crutches to run the race.

What you will need:

3 wheelchairs

3 pairs of crutches

Black top area for the races.  If you can, try the races on a grass area also.

Directions:

  • The activity leader will time the races.
  • Each person chooses a card to see if you will use a wheelchair or crutches for the first race.
  • Race from the starting point to the end, turn around, and come back.
  • Trade the wheelchair for crutches and crutches for a wheelchair and try the race again.

Talk about it:

  1. How did you feel after the race when you used the wheelchair?
  2. How did you feel after the race when you used the crutches?
  3. What did you like about using the wheelchair or crutches? Why?
  4. What didn’t you like?  Why?
  5. How do you think you would feel if you had to use a wheelchair all day?
  6. How do you think you would feel if you had to use crutches all day?
  7. What are some things you could do to help someone who uses a wheelchair or crutches?
